happiness at caffebene

hello, there! many, MANY apologies for my long-time absence. with my wedding finally over, i am now able to indulge in all the delicious food i've been missing during my wedding diet (it was rough), and more importantly, able to share it with you!

the first thing i ate when i got back to boston after my nuptials was a huge chunk of BREAD (my favorite food group). namely, garlic and cheese honey bread at caffebene. this korean chain opened in boston only recently, and i'm so glad it's a stone's throw away from my apt!

because this:

the fluffiest bread with a slight honey sweetness, which becomes more noticeable on the bottom of the bread (which is nicely buttered), topped with cheese and garlic spread. and look at the the height on that thing - like texas toast on steroids. i was instantly in love.

a few days later we returned for the ginormous mango bingsoo... with the best ripe chunks of mango and a scoop of gelato on top. amazing, creamy gelato.

it's a lot bigger than it looks here. must be shared. i will be back for more. maybe tomorrow.

caffebene is a great place to eat happy foods and hang out with friends, or to plop down and study/work for the day. a welcome addition to my neighborhood. :)

boston folks, get yourselves to caffebene now! free wifi + all the best carbs = happy patrons.

Kaju Tofu House and Kung Fu Tea

Wow, with a blink of an eye, too much time has gone by since our last update! Han and I have both been working like crazy-people, and we've been busy planning a wedding. That's right, I'm getting hitched in a few short months, and Han is going to be my beautiful maid of honor! In fact, we'll soon embark on a food-trippin'-donut-tastin'-wedding-research weekend, and I'm sure we'll share details from that as well.

In the meantime, I wanted to proclaim my love for Kaju Tofu House and Kung Fu Tea. Korean food is hard to come by in Boston, so I cherish every moment of a Korean meal. Kaju Tofu House is known for their soondubu (tofu stew), and boy was it delicious. Steph and I ate ourselves into happy fools.

The banchan spread was super tasty...

The dried seaweed was my favorite, as it was a perfect crispy mix of salty-sweet in between spoonfuls of my soondubu. I also loved how the plate of kimchi was larger than all other plates. So smart.

We both got the seafood soondubu.

The best is trying to eat it right away, burning everything in your mouth because it's so hot, but keepin' on, because all you want to do is eat the darn delicious thing. The tofu was very tender, and spice-level was moderate. Very satisfying.

We also ordered kalbi. I never go anywhere without kalbi.

It came over a bed of onions, and the marinade was fantastic. The meat itself was a little tough to chew, however.

As if one order of kalbi wasn't enough, we also ordered kalbi over rice (with carrots and cabbage) in a stone pot. Not quite bibimbap, but pretty close.

I mixed it all up as you would normal bibimbap. Again, the meat was a bit chewy/tough. I love anything with mixed rice in a stone pot - note the lovely browned/burnt pieces of rice! - so I was still a happy camper.

I love Steph's expression showing our spread.

I need to go back soon.

For dessert, one should always get boba, and Kung Fu Tea is the place to go, as it's best boba I've had in Boston.

This particular location (off Huntington and Mass Ave) is the newest one, and I love all the space and the look. They also use and sell Yakult (for Chinese/Taiwanese readers: our famous Yang Le Duo!) and macarons in case you're hungry. Anyway, the teas and smoothies are great, and the boba texture itself is phenomenal. Perfect bounce, never stale, and always with sufficient brown-sugar-sweetness. One of my favorite things is that they let you choose different levels of sugar in your drink (70%, 50%, etc) - JUST like in Taiwan. *swoon* With this being only 2 min from my apt, I'm going to have trouble fitting into my wedding dress. Wish me luck!

Whisky Live Boston 2013

We were thrilled to be invited to Whisky Live's Boston event this past week, and now - after hours of drinking and eating - we can't wait to incorporate more whisky into our lives!

It was an amazing tasting event at the beautiful Park Plaza Castle.

Jesse is looking super suave with his crystal tasting glass and press badge.

Our first stop was Lagavulin. Jesse had the 16, I believe.

It was delightfully smokey - so yes, the peatiness was apparent. I loved that they brought along a little "Peat" with them.

We then tried the Oban 14.

We were told to take a sip and then take a bite of the ginger candy. This was, in fact, a genius suggestion, as the gingery sweetness really brought out the flavor of the whisky.

Our favorite stop was the Hudson whisky stop. We loved the bottles, the single malt, and the man in charge was most awesome.

He's a like a whisky superhero.

I also loved the Old Ipswich stand, because of these four words: golden marsh spiced rum.

It smelled heavenly before I even tasted it. At first sip, you immediately think of a crisp fall evening... the hints of nutmeg and cinnamon were to die for.

We were also intrigued by Japanese whisky.

I tried the Hakushu, which was pleasantly earthy and had a lightness to it.

Throughout the event, we were treated to entertainment on high from bagpipers.

Too awesome? Indeed.

The event organizers realized that limitless whisky without some grub would be a dangerous combo. And so, behold, there was a delicious buffet before us.

There was an amazing beef dish, butternut squash ravioli, all kinds of tapenades, and lots of other things I didn't eat because I was too focused on the aforementioned.

I ate three different versions of this plate. (Y'know, going back and forth between more rounds of whisky-tasting. 'Twas only necessary.)

That. butternut. squash. ravioli. Thank you, The Catered Affair, for catering this magical dinner!

But yes, back to whisky. We also tried Parker's Heritage Collection bourbon - a limited edition. We loved that $20 of each $90 bottle will go toward ALS research.

The label includes the phrase "Promise of Hope." Just lovely.

My absolute favorite drink of the evening came next at the Koval stand.

The ginger liqueur was absolutely divine. It tasted so fresh, so gingery... I could taste all the 60 pounds of ginger that the nice lady said they peel for every bottle. Just perfect. Koval also happened to have the best swag of the evening, but we missed out! Next time, next time.

Our last stop was The Balvenie. I asked, "Which one is the most delicious?" And within .5 milliseconds, the guy poured me a sample of the 21 year single malt. (Which was, in fact, delicious.)

If you drink The Balvenie, you'll be able to rock a kilt like this guy.

We couldn't leave without grabbing some swag of our own.

Thanks for the droppers, Glenfiddich!

We also couldn't leave without snapping a shot of the awesome live band.

Made me want to get up, clap, and dance! (It could have also been the whisky...)

We had a glorious time at Whisky Live Boston, and hopefully we'll see everyone there next year!
