Noodle New Year @ King's Noodle

In honor of the lunar new year, I'm going to let you in on a little secret: Richardson, TX has some of the best Chinese food in America. A little area along Greenville Avenue in Richardson has been the hub of the Chinese community in Dallas for a long time, and the restaurants in that area are a tour de force in my favorite cuisine. Nowadays there are other conglomerates popping up around town, but Greenville in Richardson is the OG Dallas Chinatown. My favorite Chinese restaurant in that area is Jeng Chi, but we will save that for another day, another review.

Today, let's talk about King's Noodle, a fantastic little joint that specializes in Taiwanese noodle soups and shaved ice. For me, eating at King's Noodle was an inevitability. The place ain't fancy, but it definitely reminds me of Taiwan. They even have those big vats of stew and other things ready for assembly:

Here is what I got, and all for a little over ten dollars (cash only). Thousand year egg with tofu, Taiwanese beef noodle soup, and some winter melon tea to wash it all down.

I can never seem to pass up thousand year egg with tofu...

This was delightful. I loved the thick but not overwhelming sauce. The bonito flakes on top also made my day.

My beef noodle soup was also quite tasty, and the best part is that this huge bowl was only $5.50!

The noodles, though not handmade, were cooked well and wonderfully bouncy/chewy. I loved the addition of turnip (only wish there was more than one piece of turnip!). The beef was flavorful, but could have been more tender. The dark broth was pretty balanced, but could have had more 'depth.' Bottom line, I've had better beef noodle soup, but this one is pretty solid for the price.

The pickled mustard plant, or zhacai, is a necessary addition in Taiwanese beef noodle soup:

What I liked about these in particular is that they were spiced, and adding them to the noodle soup gave the whole thing a nice little kick.

Unfortunately I don't have pictures of the shaved ice here, but I can tell you that it's superb! I tried their shaved ice a few months ago in King's Noodle's stand in the food court by Asia World Market, and it made me feel like I was in Taiwan, which is always a good thing.

Happy Lunar New Year, 新年快樂 !!

  1. You know I was eyeing that noodle bowl, but maybe I will just order a huge bowl of shaved ice for dinner instead :)

  3. We need more reviews for the Dallas area! I think there are some really good places around here but no one strays away from the big chains and if they do they keep it a secret! :-s
